A few months ago, someone posted on my Facebook page an announcement of a holiday I’d never heard of – National Cuddle Up Day. Cute! I decided to learn more about it because it seems like something Cuddle Sanctuary could embrace (hyuk hyuk).
I found an upbeat website of unique national holidays that places National Cuddle Up Day – January 6th – immediately before National Bobblehead Day. (Hee.) The site describes the day like this:
National Cuddle Up Day falls on January 6 for a very important reason. Since January has some of the coldest temperatures of the year, it’s a great excuse to warm up by cuddling with those closest to you! Plus, if you’ve got a fireplace and cozy blankets, it’s even better. Did you know you can even pay someone to cuddle with you (in certain cities)? Find a partner and get ready to cuddle up this January!
I was impressed that there was mention of professional cuddling. What a progressive site, right? It got me to thinking.
Who was the genius who created this lovely holiday?
When I look up National Hugging Day – which is later this month – there’s a Wikipedia page that explains who came up with the idea. (A guy named Kevin Zaborney started it in 1986.) So when did National Cuddle Up day begin and who started it?
Another site with information about this mysterious holiday sports a promising section called “The Warm History of Cuddle Up Day.” The section gives great facts about the benefits of touch but no actual, uh, history.
What’s your secret National Cuddle Up Day?
I have a hunch that this day was created anonymously by one of us. When I say one of us – I mean a wonderful, forward thinking professional cuddler. I can’t take credit for it myself unfortunately! This morning in a bolt of insight, I came up with a really good guess who it is.
I’ve decided not to disclose my guess in case I’m right and it ruins the fun for this person. Let’s give it another few years for the idea to really catch on and then maybe it will be time for a Wikipedia page. At that point I will beg this person to be acknowledged. If I’m right.
Fun ideas how to celebrate National Cuddle Up Day
If you’re in Los Angeles, we’re celebrating tonight. Join us! If you’re in Chicago, you’re also in luck. One group is having a cuddle marathon.
If an event is not in your future, you can certainly still celebrate. A mattress company called Lull wrote a blog with super ideas to celebrate whether you’ve got a cuddle buddy or are cuddling solo. They suggest you cuddle up with a stuffed animal, a classic movie and a favorite blanket. Sounds nice!
HGTV’s blog offers more cozy ideas: Light candles, pull out the crock pot and make a stew. (Yum.)
However you choose to celebrate…
